All I can say is WOW!!

Dienstag, 28. Juni 2011

Wow! Twenty days since I last posted and so much has already happened!

Oh wow!! I last posted twenty days ago, and already worlds new of stuff has happened with Udex and I! For starters, a terrible farrier came and messed up his hooves! Ah yes, now my poor Udex's hooves are pretty much stone bruised terribly. He had his feet bandaged up and was on stall rest for a while. (Now the bandages are off, and he is outside with his friends!) However, the stone bruises are still there, and he still does walk with a limp. All we can do now is wait for the better farrier, and Udex's hooves to grow out. (Yes Udex, that does mean a mini holiday for you without any riding!) We are thinking Udex may need a corrective shoe to help his feet now. *Sigh* I'm really bummed about that and seriously hope that there is a better solution to this problem other then resulting to shoes!
walking a lame Udex
Anyways, long story short; Udex's hooves were getting extremely long and our regular farrier could not make it out. The owner of the barn told us his farrier was coming that day, and said if we would like we could use him too! After thinking about it we decided to go with it, because after all Udex's hooves were getting prettty bad. Anywho, the farrier was terrible with Udex. He was punching and hitting Udex the entire time! Udex is almost always a good boy for the farrier, but with this one Udex was trying to explain that taking out chunks so deep from his hooves that the color of it was red was not a very comfortable thing to go through! Enough about farriers; I'm getting angry just thinkin' 'bout them!

So, since Udex has been lame for a week and a half now, I haven't been riding him! I am sure he is extremely happy about this! It means more time to play with his paddock buds! The only work he has been doing is free running in the hall, taking walks with me, and playing games with me! Yesterday Udex and I had a little beach party in the arena! We turned on the sprinklers in the arena, and ran around them like crazy! We were both a sandy, muddy, drippy mess afterwards -but we sure did have fun!!!-

Look at that back!
Lookin' good Udex!
Udex got his first bath of the summer the other day! He was hosed down and lathered up with baby shampoo! In no time he was a happy go lucky, playful, lovely smelling, squeaky clean boy ready to join his palls back outside! Everything with him is alwaysss a surprise, so I do have to say, bathing him was especially fun! I almost peed myself when I put the hose on his haunches and he made his back exactly the way he should naturally hold it!!! [for those of you that don't know, Udex was trained with Rollkur (a terrible elite dressage training methood.) Holding his head in the rollkur position for so long resulted in the locking if his lumbar spine, causing him to trot in "two" parts, and giving him a sway appearance. I have been doing exercises and riding him properly to strengthen his back muscles to get them back to where they should be.] Anyways, Mr. Udex decided to keep his back perfectly for a few minutes at a time! I say out of our forty five minute bathing session, fifteen minutes of it went to his back being held great! Talk about a proud owner!! Already his back doesn't have such a sway appearance as it did when I first got him, and now he goes along and makes his back perfect!? Five months ago he could not even hold it right for a full second!
Not so skinny!
He is looking worlds better!
Udex is looking a lot healthier! He is gaining muscle beautifully; not too fast, nor too slow, but just right. Too much weight too soon can result in sooooo many problems.! I am very pleased with the nice steady pace he is taking this at! His ewe neck is slowly fading away!! [Once again, the ewe neck is due to muscle growth on the bottom of his neck... Due to holding his head in the rollkur position so long.] Udex's haunches are looking a lot fuller with muscle and healthy fat! Also, as I mentioned before, he is getting the right abdominal muscles to carry himself correctly! His hips are no longer these extremely pointy, knife-like triangles, but rather round, nubby curves on his body! You can only see a faint outline of his ribs when you look at him now!!! Before you could count every rib and stick your fingers between them he was that skinny. To just see only a little rib right now is enough to make me the proudest person on earth!!

If you haven't ever took in a horse that had mental/physical problems that classified him as worthless, done for, a failure, or a lost cause... Then my best, most important advice to you is to go right now and find a horse that needs help and give it all the love and time it deserves. As I'm writing in this blog with all the pride in the world, I can't begin to describe to you how amazing the feeling I get when I look at my horse. I look at him and think to myself. "Wow.. If it wasn't for me what would have been of this horse... Look how time and effort has really payed off!!! Look how happy he is right now, and how thankful he is!!!" I can't even tell you how amazing that feeling is. You feel like you changed someones life, because over all, you did. You changed your equine partners life, and you did it for the better! If we think about some of the best horses in history, we come to find that they usually were a rescue horse before it was their time to shine. The reason I think these horses went down in history is simple.. It was because they knew how bad off they were, and then that special person came a long and saved them. The horse forever gave himself to that special person, because the horse knew that without the special person; he wouldn't be the horse he was today.

Happy birthday!!!

June 5th was Udex's birthday!!! I think he had a great day, and was definitely spoiled!! He got to go outside in the paddock "nakey!" Since he is allergic to bees, I keep a sheet and fly mask on him 24/7 (except for riding) so he has maximum protection! He is not too fond of wearing a sheet, and when I turn him out "naked" he is extremely happy and always gallops away to his palls faster then usual. Towards the evening though he was being spoiled and the little flies were irritating him pretty bad, so then the blankey came back on him, but for most of the day he was totally naked!
Also, besides being naked, he got two presents! The first, a nice new pair of blue polo wraps to match his other blue tack! Electric blue really compliments his pretty color!! Now, the best gift of all??? A new rabbit fur brush for his face!! Udex is sooo picky about having his face brushed, (from bad past experiences and enlarged jugular veins from rollkur.) Anyways, he really enjoys having his face brushed with a softer brush! It makes me happy to see him so relaxed instead of jerking his head up to resist being brushed. I think he really enjoyed those gifts, possibly even more then I did!!!
I have a few more gifts coming for him in a few days! I have a nice new, light, electric blue lunge whip! (Well I guess thats more so a gift for me!) The icing on the cake; a beautiful new electric blue crystal brow band!! I can't wait to put that on him, with the matching polos and saddle pad! Ahh, I can already see the beauty to that! I'm so excited! I think he will just love the attention that gift gives him!!!

Okay, enough about gifts, and more about Udex!! So for his birthday I took him in and groomed him, loved on him, played a game with carrots, and gave him his birthday cake!! I made the most beautiful, tasty, amazing horsey cakes, EVER!! I am so proud of myself!! They were so good he licked the last remaining bits of them off the ground, which is very unlike Udex! He got six little cakies! The recipe for them was super simple too!! The perfect thing to "wow" everyone at the barn and make your horse go wild!! If your horse has a birthday, I definitely recommend those tasty little cakes!
So now Udex is 14!!! I can't help but think about how fourteen years ago someone had this little foal, and looked at him thinking that he could be the next dressage champion. Breaks my heart about how bad rollkur messed him up, and how he got in such bad condition. (More about that later! I think my next article will be about his rollkur story.)
Lessons are going great with Udex!! It is still a long road to recovery, but he remains so strong and always is trying his best! What a trooper!! Today we practiced leg yields and haunches and shoulder in's! He did really good, like always! He is such an intelligent horse and you really have to ride him well. You can't just ride him with your legs, or just your reins, or a little bit of both. You really have to sit on him nine hundred and fifty percent perfect before he begins to work. It is the most magical feeling to sit upon such a well trained horses back!!! Once again, the fact they had to use rollkur and ruin him really makes me angry. Anyways, my trainer and I have been working wonders with him. I am so proud of my trainer, Udex, and I! All three of us are a team. We all give our best every time. We are all doing this for the same reason... To help Udex become a horse again. All three of us have a special connection, and everything just works. I think if I didn't have the trainer I have now, that Udex and I would not be improving as much as we are now. The world needs more good people with big hearts out there!
So, I will post soon about my horses rollkur recovery story!!! My goal is to get a website against rollkur out there, and hope to put an end to this horse abuse! It won't be easy but I know there are other riders like me out there who hate rollkur too! My goal will be to share Udex's story, in hopes that people can open their eyes up to what rollkur does to these horses. -More on that tomorrow.-

Lots and lots of improvements!

I am proud to inform you that Mr. Udex has been improving... a lot! For starters, he can roll all the way over now!!! As I mentioned in one of my other posts, this means that his back is getting strong enough to flip over. A horse with a weak back will not be able to do this.  Before he would very, very, very rarely roll completely over due to his back being in bad shape from the rollkur. Every time I ride him I ride him with his back rounded! It is not easy but it sure does help!! Also I use a device called a pessoa (which uses the horses hind leg action to help him round himself, thus resulting in a nice rounded spine.) Last but not least... HORSEY SIT UPS! I bet you never knew horses could do sit ups! Of course they don't preform their sit ups the same way us humans do! A horsey sit up is when someone either stands behind the horse and rub its haunches a certain way, making the horse perk his back up and round it beautifully, or pushing up on the bottom of the tummy, resulting in the same thing. It is very hard for the horses muscles to do these 3-5 times a session!
Lessons have been going quite swell with Udex!! He is getting over his fear of being alone in the barn or the arena these days. Of course he does let out the occasional unexpected whinny, scaring the crap out of me! Nothing worse then having a peaceful trot and being all relaxed and then out of nowhere... Neiighhhhhhhhh! Always makes me smile though. (:
In my lessons we are now working on sitting trot. I have a very good seat in sitting trot, people have stopped to tell me how great it is. My seat in sitting trot is my most prized riding trait!! However, with Udex, I just can not seem to get it right (nor can anyone else who tries to sit him ;D) He is extremely bumpy! When I first got him one step in sitting trot was enough to make me loose total balance!! Now though we are working on it and I am proud to say that I can sit my horse at a sitting trot!!! Every time it gets better and better. In a few months time I will be able to sit him like all the other horses I ride!

I am so, so, so excited!!! Every day he is becoming more and more of the horse he was! You can tell that he is feeling well enough to be the real him! It makes me so proud to see how all my hard work is paying off!! It is like magic!!!! One day you have this skinny, scrawny, bony, mental horse and the next you have this intelligent, trusting, muscular, gentle horse! Nothing, and I mean nothing, can beat that feeling! I'm sitting here trying to think of how it feels to have bought a ready to go horse, and the only improvements you see are his movements with yours getting better. I could not be happy knowing I was giving all my love and effort into a horse that does not need it as more as some other unfortunate ones out there. Udex is truly a diamond in the rough.
some broken ropes
Did I mention that my horse is a Murderer? No? Well he is! He brutally slays harmless lead ropes, reins, blankets, and other tack items!! Days when he is extremely fresh and the only thing on his mind is to run, he can't bare to stand still on one place. So what does he do?? He runs away from where I have him tied up and snap goes the lead rope!!! The second one broke yesterday in just a few weeks!! Also I have had sets of reins go snap!! I don't exactly know why or how they broke, but probably had something to do with Udex's magic slaughtering powers.
Guess who has a birthday coming up!? UDEX!!! On Sunday (June 5th) Udex is turning 14 years old!! He is only two months and a day older then me!! I absolutely love the fact that we are so close in age. (: For his special day I plan on making him a very special treat and getting him a nice new soft brush for his "delicate" face!! Oh how I love celebrating horse birthdays!!!! :D Happy early birthday to you dear Udex!!!
